Getting Here

Get to Cairns by car, train, boat or plane. Whichever method of transport you choose, here are a few routes we recommend.

Fly

Cairns operates both international and domestic flights. Travel directly from Melbourne to Cairns in approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes. With plenty of connections, shuttle buses and taxis available without prior booking.

Bus

The Greyhound and Premier coaches are the cheapest and most convenient way to travel around Australia.

Train

Queensland Rail trains operate from Brisbane to Cairns for a more scenic mode of transport. Not to mention, students save up to 40% off.

Drive

There really is nothing quite like getting around Australia in the comfort of your own (or a hire) car. It is one of the more personal ways to begin your journey to Cairns.

Getting To The Great Barrier Reef

Cairns is the gateway to one of the Wonders of the World; the Great Barrier Reef. Depending on your boat type and snorkel or scuba dive location, it only takes 35 minutes to 1.5 hours to reach this breathtaking ecosystem. Take off from The Reef Fleet Terminal located on the Marlin Marina in Cairns, or from Port Douglas.

Even if you don’t enjoy being in the water, you can experience a Reef tour from a glass bottom boat and from spacious sun decks. Or perhaps, check out the fringing reefs, just a short swim off Fitzroy or Green Island. Check out our range of day, overnight and dive courses that will have you gliding over the turquoise waters of the Great Barrier Reef in no time!

For more information on selecting the best boat for you, chat with our experienced local staff!

Getting Around Cairns

Bike

Hire a Cairns scooter or bike for a fun way to cruise up and down the Esplanade.

Bus

Cairns’ local bus service, Sunbus, runs from Palm Cove to Gordonvale. The buses are cash only and we recommend checking the timetables before your trip.

Taxi

Uber and Cairns Taxi are the most common modes of rideshare and are accessible through apps. Premium services include Blacklane and Ola, or for an all-women ride-share service, use Shebah

Walk

By foot, Cairns CBD has a myriad of restaurants and hotels located within walking distance of the Esplanade.

Hire Car/Motorcycle/Campervan

Cairns has some of the most spectacular drives in Far North Queensland. To explore at your own pace, rent a car or scooter. Or, why not combine accommodation with transport and hire a budget-friendly campervan?

Climate

Cairns has a tropical climate ideal for days at the beach or on a boat. The weather in Cairns is amazingly hot and humid during summer while remaining mild and dry during winter. The best time to travel to Cairns is September. Cairns never gets too cold, even during Winter the temperature rarely drops below 17 degrees celsius!

Where pristine sands meet luscious leafy rainforests, the Daintree Rainforest is located in Cape Tribulation, a significant UNESCO World Heritage-listed site. Phone reception is limited so you can fully immerse yourself into nature and all its delight on this experience bound to activate your inner explorer.

Road Signs in Cairns

Hiking in Cairns

Cairns is surrounded by rainforests, national parks and the Great Dividing Range, which have created numerous amounts of wondrous walking and hiking tracks for all levels of fitness. Here are a few of our favourites, varying in difficulty. Remember to check conditions before your hike to ensure you are well prepared.

girl hiking to Windin Falls

Mt Whitfield Walking Track - 1.5 - 6kms (40min - 1 hour)

Locally known as “The Arrows,” this mild to moderate hike is only 5 minutes drive from Cairns CBD. Mosey through the leafy rainforest and check out the Red Arrow which leads to an incredible view of the City. The Blue, Yellow and Green Arrows range in difficulty and cater to all avid hikers. .

Ivan Evans - 7 - 8kms (1-3 hours)

A pleasant track starting from the suburb of Bayview Heights, and only 15 minutes drive from Cairns CBD. The track is not too steep and a great way to get in some extra steps for your daily exercise. This track is very much about the journey and immersing yourself in nature; it doesn't have a specific view at the end but will have you breathing easy amongst beautiful wildlife and trees.

Earl Hill - 3.5kms (1hr 16min)

A dog-friendly track with spectacular coastal views at the top, this easy yet rewarding hike is a great one for those not looking for anything too strenuous. Pack some insect repellent in summer and enjoy! A recent refurb of this track allows you to take an additional detour all the way down to Half Moon Bay, or begin your walk from the beach.

Fitzroy Island - Summit - 4kms, plus the lighthouse - 4.6kms (2.5hrs)

Hike with incredible views of the tropical Fitzroy Island and the Great Barrier Reef on the Fitzroy Island Summit. Seek out the tell-tale signs of World War II military occupation on your meander through the vines and find the secret garden walk for a smaller track intertwined between the flora and fauna. This alternative takes around 45 minutes to return. Keep an eye out for the bright green Triangle butterflies too!

Windin Falls - 11.5km (3 hours)

The most scenic waterfall to visit, you’re bound to be basking in the excitement of chasing waterfalls! A 90-minute hike to the waterfall is worth the walk, and you can take a few pictures for an insta-worthy post and cool down in the fast-flowing water once you reach the rushing cascades. This is a moderate hike and we advise families with younger kids/elderly relatives to check out the nearby waterfalls like Milla Milla instead.

White Rock Peak - 4.8km (1hr 50 min)

A moderately challenging route and popular amongst hikers and climbers, stroll through the Dindin National Park NS journey through the rainforest to the spectacular White Rock overlooking Cairns and south to the pyramid. The final section of this hike is a steep downhill descent to the best view of Cairns one can ask for. Seriously, it’s just magical!

Glacier Rock - 6.8km (2hr 45min)

Made for the experienced hikers amongst us, Glacier Rock is not for the faint-hearted. It is a hilly, well-signed rainforest walk and captures unique sights of the Barron Gorge National Park. The walking trail networks in this region were formed by the Djabugandji Bama traditional owners, who developed trails that linked the coasts to the highlands, so embark on this journey and reflect on the rich, ever present history surrounding you. Check it out for a great hiking challenge and a magical way to get amongst nature.

Walsh's Pyramid - 6km Return (5-6 hours)

Keep a look out for a pyramid-shaped peak seen from Cairns CBD, and get excited for your adventure up to Walsh’s Pyramid. This is the most demanding hike of all the trails listed, but rest assured; hikers are rewarded with incredible views of the surrounding range and local landscape. This is a strenuous walk suitable for experienced hikers only.
