Visiting Cairns can be a great family affair with lots of things that are kid and family friendly. Here are some things you can do with the kids during your time visiting this beautiful and fun city!
Fitzroy Island: Fitzroy Island is located about 29 kilometres offshore from Cairns and is great for the whole family with plenty of fun activities! It has snorkelling, bushwalking, kayaking, beach combing, and even an ocean trampoline. You can explore the island on a fun-filled day trip or stay overnight at the resort, located on the island.
Butterfly sanctuary: Kuranda is located just outside of Cairns and is home to several fun family activities. It has a butterfly sanctuary which showcases over 2000 butterflies and moths from several species, including many native Australian species. It is the largest butterfly sanctuary in the Southern Hemisphere and has the pleasure of being located in the beautiful and stunning Kuranda village.
Birdworld: Birdworld is also located in Kuranda and is a beautiful wildlife attraction great for the whole family! It has almost 60 species of birds from all around the world, including macaws, cassowaries, cockatoos and more. There are also hand-feeding and photo opportunites so the more adventurous of the group can get even closer to their flying friends! Birdworld is located at the Kuranda Heritage Markets, where you can stop off and grab a bite or do some shopping afterwards.
Koala Gardens: The fun koala gardens are Kuranda's newest addition and are a up close and personal way to see one of Australia's favourite animals! You and your family will get to see the cuddly koalas in their natural environment doing what they do best- eating and sleeping! The whole family can join in for a koala cuddle and get their picture taken while holding a koala before going to check out the rest of the gardens, which have lizards, snakes, kangaroos, wallabies and wombats!
Wildlife dome: The Wildlife Dome is located in Cairns on top of the Reef Hotel Casino and is the world's first ropes course wildlife park! Zipline amongst the wildlife, even daring to take the trip over the 4 metre saltwater crocodile, Goliath! There are also wildlife experiencing, as well as several different types of adventure challenges like slacklining and the dome-climb!
Green Island: There is a lot to do on this picturesque island with the whole family. With both a semi-submersible and glass-bottom boat available for you to use, you can check out the reef in a whole new way from above the water, and it's great if you have small kids who can't yet swim! You can also snorkel from the beach, which has lifeguards on duty, ensuring yours and your family's safety! There is also a crocodile farm with the world's largest captive crocodile, known as Cassius, which can you can visit and watch get fed his lunch!
