How To Get To Windin Falls From Cairns
To get to Windin Falls from Cairns, you'll have to drive about 1.5 hours to the trailhead and then hike for a few hours through the rainforest. It's a real adventure! From the Cairns CBD, it's just over 80 km to the Windin Falls Trailhead. If you don't have a car, you'll need to rent one as public transport doesn't visit this remote waterfall. Enjoy a scenic drive through the Atherton Tablelands and navigate to the Windin Falls Trailhead on Gourka Road. From the car park, you can begin the hike!
Many travellers also wonder, "Do I need a 4WD to get to Windin Falls?". You don't necessarily need a 4WD to access the Windin Falls Trailhead on Gourka Road. However, if the weather is exceptionally wet and muddy, which can sometimes happen in the rainy season, a 4WD will make it easier to navigate through the forest. That being said, the hiking trail can be dangerous in heavy rain, so you're better off saving this hike for a dry, sunny day. In that case, you don't need a 4WD to access Windin Falls.
Is The Windin Falls Hike Hard?
The Windin Falls hike is considered Grade 4, meaning it is quite challenging. It is an out-and-back trail that covers about 11.5km in total, with an average hiking time of around 2.5-3 hours. The trail is moderate, though the last 50m are steep. If you're reasonably fit, you should have no problem hiking this trail. But there is no wheelchair accessibility and it is a very remote hike with no facilities.
The most important thing to note on the Windin Falls hike is that the trail can be muddy and slippery in periods of heavy rainfall. Especially when you approach the falls, high water levels can make the rocky track more dangerous and unpredictable. Just make sure you wear sturdy shoes with good traction and use caution as you approach the creek.
Also pack plenty of water to stay hydrated! And pack a picnic lunch as you'll work up an appetite. Note there are no bins or facilities on the hike, so take all your rubbish with you and try to use the toilet before you embark on this adventure.
