Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I check in and where does the boat depart from?
Check in starts at the Great Adventures counters inside the Reef Fleet Terminal (1 Spence Street in Cairns) 1 hour before your departure time. The boat will depart from A Finger jetty, just outside the Reef Fleet Terminal.
How long does the boat ride take to get to Green Island?
The journey to Green Island takes about 45 minutes each way.
Does Green Island have wheelchair friendly facilities?
Wheelchair facilities are available, however there are some restrictions and some mobility may be required. There may be a few steps at the end of the gangway onto the jetty, depending on tide levels and the narrow gangways used when disembarking. Green Island has disabled bathroom facilities and pathways that are easy for wheelchairs to access. There is also a boardwalk that takes you directly through the rain forest into the centre of the Island.
I’m not a great swimmer, is there assistance snorkelling at Green Island?
Flotation/buoyancy vests are available for hire at the Green Island Dive Shop for use whilst swimming and snorkelling. There is also a lifeguard patrolled beach, so it is best to swim between the red and yellow flags to ensure there is also someone keeping a looking out.
Is there parking close to the Reef Fleet Terminal?
All Day parking is available just outside or undercover at The Pier which is located opposite the Reef Fleet Terminal. Other nearby parking is available at the Trinity Wharf, Reef Casino or Cairns Hilton hotel.
Is Green Island pram friendly?
Green Island is suitable for taking a pram, with ample room on the boat and on the platform. The beach at Green Island has quite soft sand and therefore not practical for prams to be taken onto the beach area. There are however extensive wooden boardwalks that take you through the island’s rainforest, which are suitable for prams.
Can I use credit cards on Green Island?
Yes you can. Visa, Mastercard and Amex are accepted on the Island.
Should I be worried about sharks or crocodiles?
If you’re lucky, you may see a little white or black tip reef shark. This is actually a good sign if you see one as they form a vital part of the marine ecosystem. They are shy creatures though, so will very likely swim away if you get too close. Crocodiles prefer to hang around the murky estuarine waters of rivers, lakes and swamps. The water is too clear for them all the way out at Green Island.
I really want to see a turtle. Will I see one at Green Island?
Whilst it cannot be guaranteed what marine life you will see at Green Island, there have been many sightings of green sea turtles just off the jetty and the beaches. They like to feed on the seagrass surrounding the island. So if you’re lucky, you may very well see one when you visit!
Can I hire a beach towel on Green Island?
It is recommended that you bring your own towel. Whilst you can hire towels from the Pool Bar on Green Island, supply is limited and cannot be guaranteed.
Are there any age restrictions for the tour or for activities such as glass bottom boat?
There are no age restrictions! Infants are allowed on the Green Island tour and on the glass bottom boat.
If we book the scenic flight, how many people fit on one helicopter?
5 passengers can fit on one of the scenic flights.
