Frequently Asked Questions
Where does the boat depart from and what time?
Check in starts at 8:15 am on board the vessel. The Sunlover catamaran leaves from A Finger on the left side, slip A7 at the Cairns Marlin Marina. The boat is clearly marked with the orange Sunlover name. Boarding closes at 8:40 am for an 8:45 am departure.
How long does it take to get to the island?
The ferry journey takes about 45 minutes from Cairns to Fitzroy Island.
Can I bring a pram onto Fitzroy Island?
Yes you can. The Sunlover team will be able to provide assistance when getting on and off the catamaran. However, keep in mind, as space is limited onboard, it is encouraged to pack light or use a baby carrier where possible. There are also limited sealed pathways on the island that are suitable for prams.
What facilities are available on Fitzroy Island?
Day visitors to Fitzroy Island have access to all of the island including bathrooms, freshwater showers and Foxy’s Bar and Restaurant. Some facilities such as the pool, are reserved for in-house guests staying at Fitzroy Island Resort.
Is there wheelchair access on Fitzroy Island?
Unfortunately, there is no wheelchair access available for this Sunlover service and there are limited sealed pathways on the island that are suitable for wheelchairs.
How deep is the water?
There are two main snorkelling areas around Fitzroy Island. Nudey Beach can be explored at high and low tides. The water entrance is from the beach. However, snorkelling around the jetty area is tide-dependent. At low tide, it’s sometimes impossible to get into the water without stepping on the coral (which is forbidden and dangerous). Make sure to check the tide times for your day of travel.
Can I bring my own food onto Fitzroy Island?
Yes you can. Feel free to bring a packed picnic lunch and snacks to enjoy on the beach. The camping area also has covered seating and tables. Just be mindful that there is limited space on the boat, so it is encouraged to pack as light as possible and to dispose of rubbish thoughtfully. Please note that it is not permitted to bring alcohol to the island.
What is there to do on Fitzroy Island?
There are plenty of activities you can do on Fitzroy Island! With this Sunlover package you get your snorkel equipment and a glass bottom boat tour included. You can also hire stand up paddle boards or kayaks, visit the lighthouse via one of the walking tracks or simply relax on one of the beaches.
Will the water be cold?
Cairns is located in Tropical North Queensland, so the water temperature is very pleasant all year round. Approximate average water temperatures throughout the year range from 29C/83F in December - February (summer), to 22C/76F in June - August (winter).
Do I have to worry about sharks, crocodiles or jellyfish at Fitzroy Island?
If you’re lucky, you may see a little white or black tip reef shark, but rest assured they are timid creatures and will swim away from you. Crocodiles prefer to hang around the murky waters of rivers, lakes and swamps. So the water is too clear for them out at Fitzroy Island. Stingers are present in the summer months, so it is highly recommended that you wear a stinger suit or protective swimwear to avoid being stung.
