Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I check in and where does the boat depart from?

Check in starts at the Great Adventures counters inside the Reef Fleet Terminal (1 Spence Street in Cairns) 1 hour before your departure time. The boat will depart from A Finger jetty, just outside the Reef Fleet Terminal.

How long does the boat ride take to get to Green Island?

The journey to Green Island takes about 45 minutes each way.

Does Green Island have wheelchair friendly facilities?

Wheelchair facilities are available, however there are some restrictions and some mobility may be required. There may be a few steps at the end of the gangway onto the jetty, depending on tide levels and the narrow gangways used when disembarking. Green Island has disabled bathroom facilities and pathways that are easy for wheelchairs to access. There is also a boardwalk that takes you directly through the rain forest into the centre of the Island.

Are coach transfers available from my accommodation?

Unfortunately transfers are not available for this option. You will need to make your own way to the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal. It’s centrally located, and easy to walk to if you are staying in the city centre.

Is there parking close to the Reef Fleet Terminal?

All Day parking is available just outside or undercover at The Pier which is located opposite the Reef Fleet Terminal. Other nearby parking is available at the Trinity Wharf, Reef Casino or Cairns Hilton hotel.

Is lunch included?

Meals are not included with the Eco Adventure ticket, but you are welcome to bring your own food, or Green Island has a restaurant and food outlets that provide a wide range of options, including those suitable for vegetarians.

Is Green Island pram friendly?

Green Island is suitable for taking a pram, with ample room on the boat and on the platform. The beach at Green Island has quite soft sand and therefore not practical for prams to be taken onto the beach area. There are however extensive wooden boardwalks that take you through the island’s rainforest, which are suitable for prams.

Are there stingers at Green Island?

At certain times of the year (generally November – April), jellyfish or marine stinger’s, can may be present in the seas of Northern Australia. Most jellyfish are harmless, however certain varieties may cause a reaction. Incidents involving serious marine stings in Cairns are rare. Lycra suits are available for hire with your snorkel gear during stinger season to reduce the possibility of stings and irritations while also offering protection from the sun.

What if I get sea sick?

Great Adventures has stable and fast catamarans that fare well, even in rougher ocean conditions. Unfortunately, where there is motion, whether it be a car, bus, plane or boat, some people will suffer from nausea. Motion sickness medications are available to purchase onboard, and ginger tablets are provided complementary as a natural alternative. It should be taken immediately upon boarding for this to be most effective. It will not prevent sickness if already feeling ill.

I’m not a great swimmer, is there assistance snorkelling at Green Island?

Flotation/buoyancy vests are available for hire at the Green Island Dive Shop for use whilst swimming and snorkelling. There is also a lifeguard patrolled beach, so it is best to swim between the flags to ensure there is also someone looking out.
